What to Do

Mexico is a shoppers delight. Bartering is acceptable - even encouraged - especially if prices are not marked. Popular items include woven blankets, shirts and vests (see photo above); goofy sombreros; boots, onyx pipes, and ceramic suns. Silver jewelry is another good value - make sure it is stamped .925 to ensure you are getting the real thing. But if I know you (and I think I do!) you are more interested in scoring booze and smokes.

legal drugs

Liquor and beer are a good bit cheaper in Mexico than in the US. You are permitted to bring one liter liquor or one case of beer per person (21 and older) - expect to pay about $1.20 tax at the border. Breweries were established in Mexico by German immigrants in the 19th century, thus Mexican beer is simlar to German beer. Popular brands include Corona, Dos Equis and Carta Blanca.

Dining

The restaurants of Matamoros provide excellent service, reasonable prices and a variety of authentic dishes as well as some customary American fare. Cabrito (baby goat) and quail are two traditional Mexican items offered for those looking to expand their culinary horizons. Some presonal favorites include Bigos (yummy fajitas); Santa Fe (Chinese); Garicias (international); Blanca White's (regional) and Mariscos del la Rosa (seafood.)

Nightclubs

The nightclub scene - especially during spring break - is energizing and varied... so varied that it is difficult to keep up with the changes from year to year. For insights from your fellow breakers, take a look at what clubs are getting votes at the polls or what's being talked about in the forum.
