Getting Around Matamoros Once you have successfully navigated the bridge, you will find yourself surrounded by clubs, shops and experienced salespeople hawking a variety of goods. The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18, and many venues will give you the opportunity to partake while you shop. The margaritas are "grande" and the beer "muy frio" but be very careful how much you imbibe: if you are visibly "baracho" when you walk back to the US side of the bridge, the border patrol agents will get way interested in you.... and not in a good way.
The main street coming off the bridge (Alvaro Obregon) features a lot of what you are looking for -- Garcia's is your one-stop shopping, drinking and eating establishment if you are in a hurry -- but you haven't really seen Mexico until you visit the Market ("Mercado.") There are three easy ways to get there, so don't try and walk it. You can take the free bus (big white school bus parked half a block from the bridge, leaves every half hour 10 am to 6 pm); a maxi-taxi (smaller buses, cost under a dollar each way) or a taxi (negotiate your fare before you get in -- should be about $3.00 for two and another dollar per additional person.) Update: Garcia's now offers free bus rides to and from the mercado. [more] |
