South Padre Island's proximity to Matamoros, Mexico is a big attraction for visiting Spring Breakers - particularly those between the ages of 18 and 21.

Spring Breakers are drawn across the border to shop, to eat and to party. Quick trips to Mexico are perfectly safe as long as you stay on the well-trod tourist path and behave in a civil manner. (Hint: urinating on city streets is not considered civilized behavior!)Matamoros map

Getting There

The best way to experience Matamoros is by bus; leaving the driving to someone else is a very good idea. There will be amny companies offering day trips for shopping and night trips for clubbing -- consult your copy of the most recent Coastal Current when you arrive on SPI.

hotels and restaurantsThe other alternative is to drive yourself - turn left on hwy 48 in Port Isabel and it will take you all the way to the bridge. While you can drive across the bridge, be warned that traffic moves very slowly and it is likely that your insurance policy will not cover your vehicle. The best plan is to leave your car on the US side. It will cost you about $1.50 to drive, or about .50 to walk each way.

  • All articles acquired in Mexico must be declared - there is a $400 exemption for gifts and personal articles
  • 1 liter of liquor and one case of beer may be imported per person per 30 days
  • You will be carded upon your return to the US - No ID -- No liquor!
  • If you show false or altered ID, the ID will be confiscated and you will be prosecuted
  • 1 carton of cigarettes may be imported per person ages 18 and older - be aware that you will be charged a $4.10 tax at the border
  • Prescrption drugs may be purchased, but do not attempt to bring back illegal drugs or steroids
  • You may not bring back switchblade knives or any articles of endangered species (i.e. sea turtle, crocodile or elephant boots)
